If you enjoy drama, then you probably have a love/hate relationship with the Royal Family. On one hand, family members like Harry and William are constant sources of drama, especially when it comes to the various rumors and reports that the two butted heads. But neither brother likes to air the family’s dirty laundry out, so it can be frustrating to figure out what was really going on.
Until now, that is. Do you want to know the real reason why Prince William really hated living with Prince Harry? We’ve got all the juicy details that you need to know!
First, there were intense rumors that William didn’t approve of Meghan Markle and didn’t want Harry to marry her. These rumors seemed partially confirmed around Christmas of 2018. That was when footage surfaced that showed Meghan trying very hard to talk to William, all while William ignored her and focused on adjusting his scarf!
Second, at multiple public events, it seemed obvious that William and Harry were trying to avoid each other. The most prominent example of this was the 2019 Easter service in which each brother seemed to be giving the other the cold shoulder.
Finally, there is the fact that Harry confirmed they had a falling out, though he couched everything in polite language. In an ITV documentary about Harry and Meghan’s 2019 trip to Africa, Harry said, “Part of this role and part of this job and this family being under the pressure that it’s under, inevitably stuff happens.”
He then added, “We’re certainly on different paths at the moment…. We don’t see each other as much as we used to because we’re so busy, but I love him dearly. The majority of stuff is created out of nothing, but as brothers, you have good days, you have bad days.”
So, we know that “stuff” happened to put the brothers “on different paths.” But what we now know is these “different paths” may have begun over a decade ago when William was forced to live with Harry!
Both William and Harry carried on the family tradition of military service. And in 2009, Harry joined his older brother at RAF Shawbury for Defense Helicopter Flying School. They lived together during this time, and in this BBC interview, the brothers made it clear that things weren’t going well.
To begin, Harry joked that this was the “first time, last time we’ll be living together. I assure you of that.” William wasted no time echoing this sentiment, telling the reporter, “It’s been a fairly emotional experience.”
At first, it seemed like the two brothers may have just been doing a comedic bit. But William then detailed the many sins of Harry that made him into the worst roommate ever. And what he said in the interview helps us see why just about anyone besides Meghan Markle would have hated living with Harry!
The first thing that William pointed out is that Harry is something of a house slob. The older brother initially cast shade on his younger sibling for never handling the cooking. “Bearing in mind I cook — I feed him every day — I think he’s done very well,” William joked.
Part of their arrangement was that William did the cooking and Harry would clean the dishes. Or at least, he was supposed to. William claimed that his younger brother “leaves most of it in the sink and then he comes back in the morning and I have to wash it up.”
To this, a laughing Harry replied “Oh, the lies!” But judging from what William said next, we’re pretty sure the future King of England wasn’t joking about Harry being annoying.
While listing Harry’s offenses, William also pointed out that Harry snores in his sleep. And we’re not talking soft snoring here. Instead, the snoring was loud enough to frequently wake William up from his own slumber!
“He snores a lot as well, keeps me up all night long,” William revealed.
Once again, Harry chimed in to try to defuse things with a joke. Seizing on the fact that William made them sound like an old married couple, Harry quipped, “People will start thinking we’re sharing a bed.”
William then emphasized that “No” they were not sharing a bed. “I think it’s very important we say that,” he joked.
As near as anyone can tell, William and Harry remained very close leading up to his marriage to Meghan Markle. And when the world found out that Harry and Meghan were engaged in November 2017, William cracked a rare joke on camera about the event.
As the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge later shared on their official Twitter account, Prince William told a reporter what Harry getting engaged meant to the older brother.
William started off by saying, “We’re very excited and delighted for them both, and wishing them all the happiness in this very exciting time.”
But he couldn’t help but add in a playful dig at Harry’s expense. “For me personally, I hope it means he stays out of my fridge and will stop him scrounging my food, which he’s done over the last few years.”
Obviously, William is taking the mickey a bit, making a joke, but there seems to be a sincere tinge of annoyance at Harry in his voice and expression. We can only imagine how all these little annoyances of Harry’s added up when things finally did come to a head.
