Prince Harry, the Duke of Sussex, has been cautioned that his ongoing legal disputes could potentially lead to significant financial difficulties.
According to a report by Express, Lady Colin Campbell, a prominent figure in the British media, has criticized Harry’s approach towards the press, labeling him a “vexatious litigant”. This term refers to an individual who is excessively or unnecessarily litigious.
The Duke has been ordered to pay approximately £50,000 in legal fees to the publisher of the Mail on Sunday, following an unsuccessful attempt by his legal team to dismiss part of a defense against a libel claim. Campbell has advised Harry to reassess not only his legal strategy but also his attitude towards the media. She argues that while it is acceptable to take legal action if one is defamed by the press, it is another matter entirely to constantly seek out reasons to challenge a free press, especially when one is supposed to be a proponent of press freedom.
Campbell’s comments were echoed by royal author Phil Dampier, who suggested that the £50,000 legal fee is merely the tip of the iceberg. Dampier believes that Harry’s legal expenses could be accumulating into hundreds of thousands, if not millions, of pounds. This is due to the fact that Harry is currently involved in multiple court cases.
One of these cases involves a legal challenge against the Home Office over a decision to alter his publicly funded security arrangements during his visits to the UK. This case was sparked by an article published by Associated in February 2022. Harry’s legal actions have not been without controversy. His decision to take legal action against his grandmother’s government, for instance, was met with disapproval by royal expert Ingrid Seward.
Despite these challenges, Harry has remained active in his professional life. He has participated in several events, including the Invictus Games in Dusseldorf, Germany, and a mental health summit in New York. He also recently visited a race track in Austin, Texas.
However, Harry’s departure from the Royal Family and his move to California have not been without personal cost. According to journalist and author Phil Dampier, Harry has become more dependent on his wife, Meghan Markle, for social experiences. Dampier suggests that Harry has lost many friends, as well as his royal status and military connections, following his decision to step back as a senior royal.
Prince Harry’s ongoing legal battles have raised concerns about potential financial ruin. His approach towards the press and his litigious nature have been criticized, and his legal expenses are believed to be mounting. Despite these challenges, Harry continues to participate in professional engagements. However, his personal life has been significantly impacted by his decision to step back as a senior royal.
