Tyler Perry publicly criticized Meghan Markle for her refusal to pay tribute to the legendary TV producer Norman Lear, who passed away at the age of 101. Perry, known as the media mogul and the godfather to Meghan Markle’s daughter Lilet, expressed his disappointment in The Duchess of Sussex for not honoring Lear. He accused Markle of being ungrateful and disrespectful because Lear had rejected her audition for a role in the 2019 reboot of “All in the Family” and “The Jeffersons.”

According to sources close to Perry, he was deeply saddened by Lear’s passing, considering him a mentor and friend. Perry had previously collaborated with Lear on the live remake of his classic sitcoms in May 2019, featuring an all-star cast. Meghan Markle, who was still a senior member of the British Royal Family at the time, had secretly auditioned for a role in the remake, hoping to revive her acting career. However, Lear was not impressed by her performance and chose to cast Ellie Keer instead.

Perry revealed that Markle was furious when she learned of her rejection, blaming Lear for being a sexist and accusing him of racism, claiming that she had cast her husband, Prince Harry, as Lionel Jefferson in “The Jeffersons.” Perry attempted to explain to Markle that Lear was a pioneer of social justice and diversity in television, responsible for creating influential shows like “Good Times,” “Sanford and Sons,” and “One Day at a Time.” He emphasized Lear’s generosity and compassion, as he had donated millions to causes such as civil rights, environmental protection, and education.

Despite Perry’s efforts to mediate and offer support, Meghan Markle continued to hold a grudge against Norman Lear even after relocating to California in 2020. Perry extended his Beverly Hills mansion and security team to them since they had lost their Royal protection and funding from the royal family, out of friendship and kindness. Perry hoped that Markle would appreciate this gesture and reconsider her attitude.

In response to Norman Lear’s passing, actors, producers, and industry leaders paid tribute to him, recognizing his significant contributions to American comedy and his advocacy for social justice. George Clooney, Jane Fonda, and Tyler Perry were among those who shared their heartfelt condolences and personal stories about Lear, highlighting the profound impact he had on their lives and the entertainment industry.
