A disturbing case of sexual abuse against a young girl under the age of 13 in Birmingham has resulted in the conviction and imprisonment of 73-year-old Zomid Hussein. On 31 July, Hussein was sentenced at Birmingham Crown Court for indecent assault, rape of a child, and sexual assault of a child.
Hussein’s heinous acts involved repeatedly sexually assaulting the young girl while manipulating her with threats, making her believe that no one would believe her if she spoke out. Despite this, the courageous victim came forward in 2019 to report the crimes, putting an end to Hussein’s actions.
During a voluntary interview in December 2020, Hussein chose to remain silent, answering “no comment” to all questions. However, the evidence gathered by the authorities was enough to secure a conviction.
Hussein had a prior conviction for making indecent images of children, further underlining the gravity of his actions. As a result, he was handed a 14-year prison sentence and will be registered as a sex offender for life.
Detective Constable Katie Russell, a member of the non-recent Rape and Serious Sexual Offences team, expressed her horror at the extent of the abuse. She commended the victim’s bravery in coming forward, as it played a vital role in bringing Hussein to justice and potentially granting her some form of closure.
In light of this distressing incident, the police urge anyone who has experienced sexual abuse in the past or knows someone who may have been a victim to come forward and share their story. By doing so, they not only seek justice for themselves but also help protect current and future potential victims.
