Princess Kate and Prince William have quietly been getting ready for the day they’ll eventually become king and queen. Ever since King Charles shared that he’s battling cancer, Prince William has stepped up and taken on more duties within the Royal Family. There’s been talk that both he and Princess Kate are going through extra training and preparation for their future roles.
A royal expert, Hilary Fordwich, explained that while the couple is preparing for what’s to come, they aren’t hoping for any sudden changes. If King Charles were to step down from the throne during his treatment, it could cause a major shake-up in the Royal Family. Fordwich said that William has started handling more responsibilities, and both he and Kate are adjusting to bigger leadership roles more quickly than expected. Still, she stressed that they’re not eager to take over right now.
Fordwich also pointed out that the whole royal family is focused on keeping things steady and stable. They prefer a smooth and gradual transition instead of rushing into anything. If King Charles were to give up the throne, it would break with long-standing tradition—something the Royal Family is keen to avoid.
Despite his illness, King Charles is determined to keep working. He hasn’t slowed down much, even after being hospitalized. That makes the idea of him stepping down very unlikely at the moment.
Fordwich mentioned that the last time a king gave up the throne—King Edward VIII stepping down to marry Wallis Simpson—it caused a serious crisis in the country. Because of that history, and the values passed on by Queen Elizabeth, King Charles is expected to stay committed to his royal duties for as long as he can.
Another royal expert, Jonathan Sacerdoti, also told Fox News that King Charles probably won’t take a break from his work unless it’s absolutely necessary. Even though he’s had to cancel a few public appearances recently, he’s still kept a packed schedule. He’s known for being hardworking and seems determined to continue serving the public as much as possible.
