Princess Diana spoke about the heavy burden Prince William faced from birth before her tragic death at age 36. She made a sorrowful admission regarding William’s childhood, recognizing the challenges he faced from a young age.
Diana, who would have been 63 today (July 1), died in a car accident in Paris in 1997, missing the chance to see Prince William and Prince Harry grow up, as they were just 15 and 12 at the time.
Former BBC royal correspondent Jennie Bond, who had a close relationship with Diana, reflected on what she learned from her. Jennie, now 73, mentioned that Diana knew things were tough for William from the start. In an interview with OK!, Jennie said, “Diana had great faith in William and believed the country would realize how fortunate we are to have him, and I think her words are true today.”
Diana acknowledged the pressure William felt from birth. “William felt the burden of his destiny,” Jennie shared. “Unlike other young boys, he would never have the freedom to choose his job or the direction of his life.”
Diana understood that being born heir to the throne made William different from every other child, even his brother. She said, “He was born to be king, which set him apart from every other boy or girl, even from his brother.”
William recalled feeling “completely numb” after his mother’s death. In a BBC documentary marking the 20th anniversary of her death, the now 42-year-old remembered walking behind his mother’s casket, calling it “one of the hardest things I’ve ever done.
William, who has three children with Kate Middleton, said he used his long fringe as a “safety blanket” during the walk to Westminster Abbey. “I felt if I looked at the floor and my hair covered my face, no one could see me,” he said.
There was an initial plan for William to walk alone behind the casket, but Harry objected, not wanting his brother to endure that alone. “It didn’t seem right that Willy would have such a hard time without me,” Harry wrote in his 2023 memoir, “Spare.”
