Doctor warns of the worrying symptoms that mean common disorder could actually be bowel cancer

A doctor is warning that common stomach problems like bloating, cramps, and changes in bathroom habits could be mistaken for irritable bowel syndrome when they might actually signal something more serious – bowel cancer.

Many people experience occasional digestive issues, with about 10-15% of Americans dealing with IBS symptoms that come and go. But there are key differences to watch for that could indicate cancer rather than just IBS.

While IBS doesn’t increase cancer risk, certain warning signs shouldn’t be ignored. Things like unexplained weight loss, blood in your stool (especially if it’s dark red or black), very thin stools, or constant fatigue could point to bowel cancer rather than just digestive troubles.

The doctor notes that rectal bleeding is never normal with IBS, and if you see blood when wiping for more than three weeks, you should get checked out.

Other red flags include losing weight without trying – cancer can stop your body from properly absorbing nutrients. And while everyone feels tired sometimes, extreme, ongoing fatigue might mean something more serious when combined with other symptoms.

The doctor stresses that while these symptoms don’t always mean cancer, it’s better to get them checked early, especially if you’re over 50 or have other risk factors like family history, poor diet, smoking, or heavy drinking.

The key message is not to panic, but not to ignore persistent changes in your body either – getting evaluated could make all the difference.
