Do you know that 1,426 illegal migrants have crossed the Channel in the last week? This is a big increase, especially since the Labour Party took over the government. About 15% of this year’s crossings happened in just the first 16 days under their control. Just yesterday, 228 migrants arrived in Dover using four dinghies and even a stolen yacht.
Since Keir Starmer took control at the beginning of the month, 2,143 migrants in 37 dinghies have crossed the Channel. So far this year, 15,717 migrants in 309 boats have made the journey, which is 10% more than last year. If this keeps up, it could break the 2022 record of 45,774 crossings.
These crossings are putting a lot of pressure on the UK’s asylum system. Many migrants are being housed in hotels because there isn’t enough social housing available. This costs the UK £5.6 million a day.
The crossings usually increase in late summer when the weather is better. For example, in August 2022, more than 8,600 people crossed the Channel in just one month.
The UK government has tried many ways to stop these crossings, like new laws and more patrols, but the numbers are still high. Most of the people who arrive claim asylum, which adds to the already large number of cases the UK has to process.
These migrants come from many different countries, hoping to find safety or better opportunities in the UK.
