Keir Starmer, the new Prime Minister, had a very busy first day. He held his first cabinet meeting and a press conference where he talked about his plans.
Starmer said he will start a tour of the UK tomorrow. He warned that tough decisions will be made soon. He also said the NHS and prisons in England are in bad shape, but work has already begun to fix the NHS. He confirmed that the previous government’s plan to send migrants to Rwanda has been cancelled.
Our political correspondent reported that Starmer was in high spirits during his first cabinet meeting. He welcomed his team and stressed the importance of getting to work right away.
In his press conference, Starmer promised a government focused on serving the people. He said the NHS is broken, and the first step to fixing it is to acknowledge the problem. He plans to reduce waiting lists by having experts from hospitals in London and Leeds work extra hours.
Starmer also mentioned the need to reform the prison system, which is overcrowded. He appointed the CEO of Timsons, known for hiring former prisoners, as the new prisons minister.
Starmer made it clear that the Rwanda deportation scheme is over. The former Home Secretary disagreed, saying the policy could have worked if done properly.
Starmer has a busy schedule ahead. He plans to tour the UK, meeting leaders from different regions, and will attend his first major international meeting, the NATO Summit in the United States.
