The Duchess of Sussex, Meghan Markle, hasn’t visited the UK with Prince Harry since September 2022, when Queen Elizabeth II passed away. Meghan and Harry were in the country to attend the WellChild Awards, not for a family visit, but coincidentally, they were there when the monarch died
. They extended their trip to follow the royal mourning period and attend the funeral. However, Meghan hasn’t returned to the UK in an official capacity since then. Although, she did have a layover once while traveling elsewhere.
Last month, Meghan, 42, landed at Heathrow on her way to Nigeria from Los Angeles. She chose not to step outside the airport, instead waiting for Harry to join her before they took a night flight to the African country. Now, a royal expert suggests that Meghan won’t come back to the UK unless two conditions are met.
It’s claimed that Meghan will only return if the couple has their own permanent residence in the country and if they have security at a level she deems appropriate. The couple hasn’t had their own home in Britain since they vacated Frogmore Cottage last year at King Charles’ request. Although they stepped down as senior royals in 2020, they made their departure permanent the following year after the late Queen stated they couldn’t continue with a ‘half-in, half-out’ approach to representing the monarchy.
When they moved into their Montecito mansion that summer, Prince Harry’s cousin Eugenie and her family moved into Frogmore Cottage for a while. Despite its humble name, it is a sprawling estate worth millions.
Tom Quinn, a royal commentator, told The Mirror that Prince Harry misses his old life and friends, many of whom don’t get along with Meghan. Quinn explained, “Harry misses his Old Etonian and army friends, many of whom have not visited because they don’t get on with Meghan.”
“As time goes by, Harry misses some aspects of his old life in the UK. The honeymoon period in the States is ending, and Harry is looking back at the past with rose-tinted spectacles.”
Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have only brought their daughter, Lilibet, once to his homeland. While Archie was born in the UK, they left before he turned one, so he likely doesn’t remember much.
As a result, their two children haven’t spent time with Prince William and Kate Middleton’s children – their only first cousins: Prince George, Louis, and Princess Charlotte.
Quinn added, “Meghan has said she’s only prepared to return to England if she and Harry have a place of their own and the security they feel is essential. Meghan will never return to the UK and stay with her husband’s relatives.”
“If the couple manages to find a permanent home and sort out the security issues, they will certainly want to bring their children to the UK. However, it will take a lot of diplomacy to develop a genuine and warm relationship between Archie, Lili, and their cousins, George, Charlotte, and Louis.”
