Prince Harry recently talked about grief and loss in a heartfelt interview. He spoke with Nikki Scott, who started a charity called Scotty’s Little Soldiers. This charity helps military families who have lost a loved one.
Harry shared his own story of losing his mother, Princess Diana, when he was just 12 years old. He said it was very hard and emotional for him. In the video, released on Thursday (27 June), Harry said, “It’s so easy as a kid to think or convince yourself….you convince yourself that the person you’ve lost wants you, or you need to be sad for as long as possible to prove to them that they are missed. But then there’s this realization of, no, they must want me to be happy.”
Nikki Scott also shared her story. She talked about the day she had to tell her young son, Kai, that his father, Corporal Lee Scott, had died in Afghanistan. Nikki said it was the hardest thing she ever had to do and that it broke her son’s heart. Kai was only five years old at the time. She had to find a way to explain to him that his dad was never coming home. She said it felt like she was shattering his world.
Harry understood her pain. He said that when you lose someone you love, you often feel like you have to stay sad to show how much you miss them. But then, you realize that the person you lost would want you to be happy and live your life.
The interview was recorded and shared in a video by Scotty’s Little Soldiers to raise awareness about the needs of children in the UK who have lost a parent in the military. Harry, who served in the military for 10 years, is the global ambassador for this charity.
During his visit to the UK in May, he attended an event for the charity and a special ceremony to mark the 10th anniversary of the Invictus Games. The Invictus Games are an international sports event for wounded, injured, and sick servicemen and women, both serving and veterans. Harry started these games in 2014.
While Harry was in the UK, his wife Meghan Markle stayed in the US with their two children.
