A devastating case of child abuse has left the nation in shock after a mother was convicted of murdering her own three-year-old son. Christina Robinson, 30, was found guilty of murdering her son, Dwelaniyah Robinson, and was sentenced to life in prison with a minimum term of 25 years.
The trial at Newcastle Crown Court revealed a horrific “campaign of violence” that Dwelaniyah suffered at the hands of his mother. In the weeks leading up to his death, Robinson had slapped and beaten him with a bamboo cane, claiming that it was a biblical punishment. She also neglected him by leaving him alone at home and deliberately scalded him with boiling water, causing severe burns.
According to a recent update from Sky News, the court heard that Robinson had told her son’s father that she was ashamed to seek medical attention for her son’s burns and instead wrapped him in bandages she had ordered online. When Dwelaniyah died, Robinson waited 20 minutes before calling 999, claiming that her son had choked on a cheese sandwich.
Detective Chief Inspector Simon Turner said, “Dwelaniyah was a defenseless little boy who had his life ahead of him, but this was cruelly taken away from his own mother—someone he should have been able to trust, someone who should have cared about him.”
Robinson’s defense was that she was following the teachings of the Black Hebrew Israelite religion, which she claimed advocated the use of the rod for the correction of children. However, the prosecution argued that her actions were a clear case of child abuse and neglect.
The jury delivered a guilty verdict on Thursday, March 21, finding Robinson guilty of murder and four child cruelty offenses. She was also convicted of child neglect for leaving Dwelaniyah alone at home while she had an affair behind her husband’s back.
This tragic case highlights the devastating consequences of child abuse and neglect. It is a stark reminder of the importance of protecting our children from harm and ensuring that they are raised in a safe and loving environment.
As we mourn the loss of Dwelaniyah, we must also acknowledge the trauma and suffering he endured at the hands of his mother. It is our hope that this case will serve as a warning to others who may be considering similar actions and that it will inspire greater awareness and action to prevent such tragedies from occurring in the future.
