Prince Harry, Duke of Sussex, made a swift 24-hour visit back to the UK this week to see his father, King Charles III, following the news that the monarch has been diagnosed with cancer.
According to a recent report by Daily express, The king’s diagnosis was announced publicly on Monday. It is understood he personally phoned his youngest son to inform him of the news shortly before the public statement. Harry, who now resides in California, reportedly booked an overnight flight immediately after getting off the phone with his dad.
Harry arrived in the UK on Tuesday afternoon and went straight to see the king at Clarence House. He spent around 30 minutes visiting privately with Charles before returning to Heathrow Airport on Wednesday morning to fly back to California.
Harry’s wife, Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, remained in California to care for their two young children – 4-year-old Archie and 2-year-old Lilibet. This marks Harry’s second solo trip to the UK in the past six months.
Last September, he visited London briefly to attend the WellChild Awards, of which he has been a patron since 2007. He also came solo last May for his father’s coronation, although that trip lasted less than 48 hours.
There has been ongoing tension between Harry and the royal family since he and Meghan stepped back from official duties in 2020. However, sources say King Charles was “very touched” by Harry’s visit and willingness to rush to his side during the health crisis.
The king has been diagnosed with a type of blood cancer called multiple myeloma. While serious, it is said to be treatable and should not disrupt his official duties. Charles was photographed over the weekend attending church services alongside Queen Consort Camilla, looking well.
Harry’s trip sparked speculation he may return to the UK again soon for a major royal event – the Invictus Games. The sporting event for wounded veterans is slated for later this year in Dusseldorf, Germany. As founder of the Invictus Games, Harry’s attendance would be expected.
Some sources claim the British royal family has indicated willingness to host a future Invictus Games in the UK, but only with Harry’s approval. This could signal a warming of relations between Harry and his father and brother, Prince William.
The two princes had a very brief reunion last week, spending under an hour together at Clarence House. While cordial, sources say William remains upset over how Harry has handled the situation.
With King Charles now facing health issues, there is hope on all sides that some family healing can take place. The nation continues to wish the king well as he begins cancer treatments and carries on stoically with his royal duties.
