Prince Harry made a quick trip to the UK this week to visit his father, King Charles III, after learning that the monarch has been diagnosed with cancer. This was Harry’s first time back in the UK and seeing his father in person since last year.
According to Daily Express, The Duke of Sussex flew overnight from his home in California, landing in London on Tuesday afternoon. Harry wasted no time and headed straight to Clarence House, where Charles and his wife Camilla live. Father and son met for about 45 minutes in what was an emotional reunion.
Details of their conversation have been kept private. However, Charles was said to have personally called Harry to inform him of the cancer diagnosis before the news was made public on Monday. Harry is reported to have wanted to return to the UK as soon as he heard in order to be by his father’s side.
Doctors discovered Charles has a form of cancer while he was being treated for an enlarged prostate last week. The palace has not revealed what type of cancer it is, only saying it is not prostate cancer. Charles’ condition was caught early and he remains in good spirits while undergoing outpatient treatment.
Nonetheless, the news came as a shock to the royal family and nation. At 73 years old, Charles had just recently ascended to the throne following the death of his mother, Queen Elizabeth II, last September
There are hopes that Harry’s visit could lead to a reconciliation between him and the royal family. Harry and his wife Meghan stepped back from royal duties in 2020 and moved to America. Last year they levelled criticism at the royals in interviews and Harry’s memoir, widening the rift.
Harry and Meghan also gave up their UK home, Frogmore Cottage. So unlike past visits, Harry did not stay at any royal residence on this trip. He reportedly spent the night at a luxury hotel in central London instead.
There are currently no plans for Harry to meet with his brother Prince William while in the UK. William has already resumed public duties after taking a short break following the news about his father’s health.
Harry’s visit to the UK is expected to be brief as he is likely eager to return home soon to Meghan and their two young children. But even a short visit could go a long way in bringing the family back together during a difficult time.
The public has also joined the royal family in sending King Charles messages of support. Prime Minister Rishi Sunak said the country is “incredibly thankful” Charles’ cancer was detected early.
Charles has the difficult task of continuing his kingly obligations while undergoing cancer treatment over the coming weeks. But he has demonstrated his dedication to service throughout his life. The king has also received an outpouring of warm wishes from well-wishers around Britain and the world.
