The royal family is abuzz with rumors that Prince Andrew and Sarah Ferguson, famously known as “Fergie”, are planning to remarry after over 20 years of divorce. Though the couple have remained on good terms and co-parent their two daughters, Princesses Beatrice and Eugenie, they have not been romantically involved since their 1996 separation and subsequent divorce
However, sources close to the Duke and Duchess of York say that the couple have rekindled their romance in recent years and are now considering walking down the aisle once more. They apparently already have the blessing of King Charles to move forward with a second wedding.
According to Daily Mail, King Charles is said to be supportive of his younger brother remarrying Fergie, seeing it as a potential way to rehabilitate Andrew’s public image after the scandal surrounding his ties to convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. The Duke was stripped of his royal duties and patronages in January 2022 at the order of the late Queen Elizabeth.
While Charles technically no longer needs to give permission for royals to marry after the first six in line to the throne, the new monarch’s blessing still carries significance. It signals the royal family is ready to welcome Fergie back into the fold after all these years.
The Yorks’ remarriage would likely be a more low-key affair compared to their extravagant 1986 royal wedding held at Westminster Abbey. The ceremony would potentially take place at the small Royal Chapel of All Saints near Andrew and Fergie’s home at Royal Lodge. This was the same location as their daughter Princess Beatrice’s under-the-radar wedding in 2020 during COVID-19 restrictions.
Keep in mind, however, that these are still just rumors. Neither Andrew nor Fergie have officially confirmed that marriage is in the cards again anytime soon. But their close relationship in recent years, including still living together at Royal Lodge, has sparked speculation that they want to formalize things once more.
Andrew and Fergie have endured immense public scrutiny over the years, both together and separately. But it seems their bond has held strong. Fergie was reportedly a great source of support for Andrew during the civil sexual assault case filed against him by Virginia Giuffre in 2022. The case was ultimately settled out of court.
If the Duke and Duchess do decide to remarry, it would surely be one of the most surprising royal reconciliations in recent history. Many wrote them off after their very public and messy divorce decades ago. But it seems that in their older age, Andrew and Fergie may have found their way back to each other after all.
The royal family is likely bracing itself for the media frenzy that will ensue if a York remarriage is announced. But King Charles seems willing to handle the public interest and additional scrutiny of his controversial brother if it makes Andrew happy.
Only time will tell whether Prince Andrew and Fergie take the leap to say “I do” for the second time. But one thing is clear – their unique bond has withstood the test of time despite the ongoing turbulence of royal life.
