Robert Harman, a royal author with over 30 years of experience covering the British monarchy, has sharply criticized Prince Harry and Meghan Markle as “easily offended” and “pretty prickly” in a recent interview. His comments come on the heels of the release of his new book “Charles III: New King, New Court, The Inside Story.”
Speaking to GB News Breakfast, Harman claimed the Sussexes seem to take offense at even minor slights and feel resentful about how situations unfold.
“They’re very quick to respond to any given situation in their books and their TV interviews. You see time and again that they feel resentful – Harry and Meghan feel that, you know, something hasn’t gone their way and that this is part of some sort of calculated campaign against them,” Harman stated.
As an example, he pointed to Harry’s memoir “Spare,” in which the Duke of Sussex complains that no one returns his calls and that he struggles to get through to anyone in the royal institution.
“It’s just all about me, me, me,” Harman said. “The whole kind of royal machine, if you like, is a team effort and I just think it’s very sad because Harry and Meghan had such potential.”
Harman argued that when Harry and Meghan do make public statements about royal matters nowadays, it is often just to communicate how miserable they were as working royals.
“Now when we tend to hear from them on a royal matter, it’s just to say how miserable they were being royal,” he told the GB News hosts.
The author believes the Sussexes’ easily offended nature and tendency to see themselves as victims makes it difficult for them to operate as part of the collective royal family.
In Harman’s view, they seem to take even small perceived slights as intentional attacks instead of understanding that minor issues are inevitable when working in a large institution.
While Harman does not see Harry and Meghan returning to serve as working members of the royal family anytime soon, if ever, he does hope they will continue visiting the UK periodically
“They won’t return to the royal working unit but I hope they keep returning to the UK,” he stated.
The Sussexes resigned from royal duties in 2020 and moved to California, where they now reside with their two young children.
Relations between the couple and the royal family have been strained since their departure from duties and airing of grievances in interviews and Harry’s memoir.
Having covered the royals for over 30 years, Harman has published numerous biographies and insider accounts of the monarchy.
His latest book provides new details on King Charles III’s vision for his reign and the future of the modernized “Firm” under his stewardship.
As a longtime royal expert and commentator, Harman’s perspectives on Harry, Meghan and their complex relationship with the Windsor family carries significant weight.
His criticism of the Sussexes’ tendency to take offense and feel resentful casts them in an unflattering light compared to most working members of the royal family.
It remains to be seen if Harry and Meghan will offer any response to Harman’s blunt remarks about their dispositions and mindsets
