Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have been accused of trying to smuggle in a Netflix camera crew during their walkabout in Windsor. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex, who had flown in from the US to attend the Queen’s funeral, joined Prince William and Kate Middleton in greeting the public outside Windsor Castle, in a rare show of unity among the former ‘Fab Four’.
However, according to a report by TalkTV, a British television channel, Harry and Meghan had a hidden agenda behind their appearance, as they were secretly filming for their Netflix documentary series, Harry & Meghan, which was released in January 2023. The report claimed that a camera crew, disguised as members of the press, was following the couple at a distance of 100 yards, and that Meghan was wearing a microphone under her coat.
According to Thenews, The report also alleged that Harry and Meghan had not informed the palace or the other royals of their filming plans, and that they had breached the protocol and the privacy of the mourners. The report cited an unnamed royal source, who said that the couple’s behaviour was “disrespectful and insensitive” and that they had “exploited the Queen’s death for their own gain”.
The report sparked a lot of outrage and criticism from the public and the media, who accused Harry and Meghan of being “shameless” and “hypocritical”. Many people pointed out that the couple had previously complained about the lack of privacy and the media intrusion in their lives, and that they had left the royal family to pursue a more independent and peaceful lifestyle in the US. They also questioned the ethics and the quality of the documentary, which featured many controversial and sensational claims about the royal family and their decision to quit.
Harry and Meghan have not responded to the report, but their spokesperson said that they had “no comment” on the matter. However, their Netflix partner, J.R. Moehringer, who co-wrote and co-produced the documentary, defended the couple and said that they had done nothing wrong. He said that the documentary was “an honest and authentic portrayal of their journey” and that they had “the right to tell their own story”.
He also said that the camera crew was not “smuggled in” but had obtained the necessary permissions and credentials to film in Windsor. He said that the crew was discreet and respectful, and that they did not interfere with the other media or the public. He said that Meghan’s microphone was not hidden but was visible and that it was “a common practice for documentary makers”.
He added that the documentary was not intended to be disrespectful or insensitive to the Queen or the other royals, but to pay tribute to them and to express their condolences. He said that the documentary also showed the positive and supportive side of the royal family, and that it was “a balanced and fair representation of the facts”.
