“Three hours later, this man humiliated a black woman simply because of the color of her skin. However, he regretted it a lot. Mary Waters’ day couldn’t have gone any worse. She had just returned home from the funeral for her mother, which had left her incredibly heartbroken and feeling terribly lonely.
This was because for Mary, her mother was all that she had in the world in terms of family. Her father had left her and her mother when Mary was just a baby, so the young woman had no idea who the man who helped give her life was or where he was in the world. However, this hadn’t bothered Mary when she had been growing up because she had always had her mother to support her and give her all of the love and care that she could possibly need to have a good childhood.
Because Mary’s mother was a single parent, money was quite tight for the small family as Mary was growing up. Often, the young girl’s mother would have to prioritize food bills and rent over luxuries. But while Mary sometimes felt jealous over all of the toys and the latest clothes that her friends had, she knew that her mother was doing the best that she could to provide for her, and that was all she could ask for.
As the years went by, Mary began to show a real aptitude for school and academics. It was as if she simply understood all of the information that she was being taught with hardly any problems. It wasn’t long before she was asking for harder assignments in school simply so that she wouldn’t get bored during lessons as she found them too easy for her understanding.
Recognizing that Mary was quite a special student, the Headmaster arranged a meeting with the young girl’s mother to discuss having Mary skip a year or two. At first, the older woman wasn’t too sure. She didn’t want her daughter to feel pressured into a situation that she wouldn’t like. But after talking it through with Mary, who wanted to skip a year, she finally agreed.
As Mary got older, her intelligence only grew. She graduated at the top of her class in high school, and she was able to secure herself a full scholarship to one of the most prestigious colleges in the country. They had heard about her intelligence and wanted to give her the chance to use it properly. Mary’s mother was so proud of her. However, Mary told her that there was no way that she could have done it without the support and love that the older woman gave her.
Mary studied hard at the college, giving it her all, as she wanted to graduate with as high of a degree as possible. That way, she would be able to have as many opportunities as possible in terms of where she could work and what she could do with her life.
After graduating near the top of her class, Mary soon began to put all of her time and effort into creating her own business. She wanted to create something that would generate her a lot of money, as she wanted to be able to help her mother out and make sure she had somewhere comfortable to live in her retirement years.
Years passed by, and Mary was living quite a successful life. However, one day the inevitable happened, and she received a phone call to tell her that her mom was in the hospital. Panicking about what had happened, Mary got to the hospital as quickly as she could. But once she was there, the doctors gave her some terrible news. Her mother had fainted while out in her front yard gardening. One of her neighbors had noticed and called the ambulance. After a few tests at the hospital, it was revealed that she actually had cancer, and it was too far along to treat.
Mary was devastated at the news. Mary loved her mother dearly and didn’t know what she would do without her. A few weeks passed by, and Mary’s mother got weaker and more frail by the day. Eventually, she passed away with Mary by her side, comforting her the entire time.
After the death of her mother, Mary arranged a lovely funeral and had all of her mother’s friends attend. Once that was over, she returned to her own home, at a loss of what to do now that her best friend and supporter was gone. However, the funeral wasn’t the end of Mary’s troubles. She still had the matter of sorting out all of her mother’s belongings. The woman kept everything that was important to her and donated everything else.
Finally, the only thing left to do was to sell the home that her mom had lived in. The house was a fairly large and very modern place that anyone would love to have. It had multiple bedrooms, a large kitchen and living room, a massive garden, and even a swimming pool, as her mother had loved to swim.
Mary received lots of offers as soon as the house was put onto the market. Wanting to make sure that the place was going to a good person or family, she decided to showcase it herself to anyone who wanted to look around the building. The first few families were all polite and kind. They asked Mary questions about the home and expressed their love for how it looked and how cozy and warm it felt inside.
However, it was when Mary received an offer from a man called Peter Smith that things took a turn. The man had seen the house up for sale, and before putting in an offer, he wanted to take a look around to see what it was like. Upon arriving at the house, the man immediately noticed Mary waiting in front of it and scoffed.
He began to berate the young woman, telling her that there was no way she would be able to afford such a nice place like that, and that she should simply move along, as he didn’t want anyone with black skin wrecking the house. He was almost certain he was going to buy it.
Mary was immediately shocked at the man’s rude and racist behavior. Almost told the man to go away. However, wanting to see how he would react, she merely told Peter that she was the estate agent there to show him around. The man began to laugh derisively, mocking Mary and explaining that there was no way she could be an estate agent.
He once again spouted hurtful and racist comments, saying that because she was black, Mary was nowhere near smart enough to get a college education and a real job. The man even went as far as to accuse the young woman of trying to scope the house out for the best places to enter it so that she could come back when someone had moved in and break in to steal things.
Mary simply couldn’t believe her ears to all of the horrible things that the man was saying. She had never met someone so blatantly racist and bigoted. After finally having enough of his horrible tirade, Mary firmly told Peter that she wanted him to leave her property. Peter simply laughed and told her that he wasn’t going anywhere.
Not wanting to get into a fight with him, Mary simply called the police on Peter, claiming that he was trespassing on her property. Seeing that she was serious, Peter scoffed and got back into his car before driving off, thinking that would be the last she would hear of him. Mary decided to return home.
Later that evening, she received a call from her estate agent, claiming that someone had put in an offer on the house well above the asking price. They encouraged her to take it as it was a lot of money. But Mary had a suspicion that the person who had done that was the horrible man from the afternoon, and there was no way that she was going to sell to him. Instead, she refused the offer and decided to give it to a family of six who had confessed that they didn’t have enough money to even meet the asking price but had put in an offer anyway.
Mary, because of her successful business, didn’t need a lot of money, and she knew that her mother would have wanted the house to go to the family. She would have wanted it to be a place where the children could grow up happily and somewhere where they could make a lot of memories, which is exactly what they did.
It takes nothing to be kind to one another, and it makes the world a better place. Remember to always be kind, as nothing else, especially skin color, matters.
