A man has been put in jail because someone who was riding in his car died when they crashed into a tree in Coventry. The man’s name is John Bates, and he was driving a fancy car called a Jaguar XF Sport. The crash happened late at night on October 2, 2021, on a road called Eastern Green Road. It’s really sad, but the person sitting in the back seat, Neil Keenan, who was 52 years old, died right there where the crash happened. It was close to a place where two roads meet, called Alspath Lane. The person sitting in the front seat also got seriously hurt.
When the crash happened, John Bates hurt his leg and arm pretty badly. The police arrested him right away because of what happened.
Just yesterday, on Friday, June 9, John Bates was told he had to go to jail for seven years and one month. The judge said this in a special court called Warwick Crown Court. John Bates is 29 years old and lives on Ruskin Road in a place called Gateshead.
Back in April, on the 26th, John Bates admitted that he did something really dangerous and caused someone’s death because of how he was driving. He also admitted that he hurt someone else really badly because of the way he was driving. As a result, he won’t be allowed to drive for seven years.
A police officer named Detective Sergeant Julie Lyman, who works for a special unit that investigates serious accidents, said that John Bates did something really careless, and because of that, something really bad happened. She thinks he deserves to be in jail, and because of that, there is one less dangerous driver on the roads, which makes the West Midlands a safer place. She wants to let everyone know that she is thinking about Mr. Keenan’s family and friends during this difficult time.
