Lady Colin Campbell, a royal commentator and author, has launched a ‘scathing’ attack on Meghan Markle, the Duchess of Sussex, claiming that she would ‘depart’ from her marriage with Prince Harry if she found a ‘suitable billionaire’.
According to a report by GB News, Campbell made the remarks on GB News, a new British news channel, where she discussed the rumours that the Sussexes were looking for a new home in the UK or the US.
Campbell, who has been vocal in her criticism of Meghan and Harry in the past, said that she did not believe any of the reports that suggested the couple were planning to relocate from their current residence in Montecito, California.
She said that the stories were ‘a load of [nonsense]’ and that they kept changing their alleged destination. She joked to host Patrick Christys: ‘We should be so lucky!’ while laughing.
Campbell also speculated on the dynamics of the relationship between Meghan and Harry, saying that she thought Meghan was ‘in control’ and ‘wears the trousers’ in the marriage.
She said that Meghan ‘played Harry like a piano, hitting the right keys until she got everything she wanted’. She added that Harry was ‘so desperate to please’ Meghan and was ‘besotted with her’, but also suggested that Meghan would not hesitate to leave him if she found a better option.
She said: ‘If she finds a suitable billionaire who’s more influential than Harry, who’s more compliant than Harry, who’s more successful than Harry, who’s more of everything than Harry, I think she will depart. And I think nobody wants her!’¹
Campbell also compared Meghan to Harry’s late mother, Princess Diana, whom she has written several books about. She said that both women had ‘many of the same failings’ and were ‘dominating, charming and captivating’ personalities.
However, she claimed that Meghan’s ambition was ‘always to outshine Diana’, which she said was impossible because Diana was ‘irreplaceable.
Campbell’s comments have sparked a backlash from some viewers and fans of Meghan and Harry, who accused her of being ‘bitter’, ‘jealous’ and ‘obsessed’ with the couple. Some also defended Meghan and Harry’s right to choose where they want to live and how they want to raise their family.
Meghan and Harry have not responded to Campbell’s remarks or the rumours about their potential move. The couple stepped back from their senior royal roles in 2020 and moved to the US, where they have signed lucrative deals with Netflix and Spotify. They have also launched their own foundation, Archewell, and have been involved in various charitable and humanitarian causes. They have two children, Archie and Lilibet.
