The Ringway Centre located in Smallbrook Queensway, Birmingham, is a well-known landmark in the city center. However, its future is uncertain. The developer, CEG, has been planning to demolish the vacant building from the 1960s, originally designed by James A Roberts.
They want to replace it with a new development, but their previous idea of a mixed-use scheme never took off. Instead, they now propose building three tall residential towers that would have around 1,700 apartments.
These plans will soon be presented to the Birmingham City Council’s planning committee. If approved, it will kick-start a long-term project of demolishing the old building and constructing the new ones, which will likely take at least ten years to complete.
Before this important decision is made, BirminghamLive had the opportunity to visit the unoccupied Ringway Centre after nearly ten years of vacancy.
