Queen’s ex-chaplain blasts King Charles over ‘disrespectful’ Easter message amid ‘ongoing act of antagonism’

King Charles has faced backlash over his recent Easter message, which mentioned both Judaism and Islam.
The message was shared on Maundy Thursday, a day important in Christianity. Dr. Gavin Ashenden, who used to be chaplain to the late Queen, strongly criticized the King for what he called a “disrespectful” move.
In his message, King Charles talked about Jesus washing the feet of his followers as a symbol of love and humility. He said this act of kindness was not only central to Christian beliefs, but also echoed values found in Judaism and Islam, like helping strangers and caring for those in need.
However, Dr. Ashenden said the King’s message caused more confusion than support. He argued that Easter is a Christian celebration and that bringing in other religions during this time ignores important differences between Christianity and Islam.
He also pointed out that many Christians around the world face violence from extremists, and blending the two faiths as if they are the same could be seen as offensive.
Ashenden said the King seems to speak about all religions as if he belongs to each one, which can make it unclear what he truly believes. He suggested that instead of generalizing about multiple religions, the King should have focused on what makes Christianity unique, especially during Easter.
For example, he highlighted that Christianity views God as a father and that Jesus claimed to be the only path to God something that isn’t found in other religions.
In the end, Ashenden said the King’s message might feel hurtful to many Christian communities who are already struggling. He believed the monarch should be more honest and respectful toward the faith he represents, especially on such an important holiday.
