GB News host Matt Goodwin interrupted the program with an urgent announcement about immigration. He told viewers, “You have been lied to,” as he discussed a new report from the International Monetary Fund (IMF). According to Matt, the report challenges long-standing beliefs that allowing many refugees and low-skilled workers into the country helps the economy. He believes this report could be a major problem for Prime Minister Keir Starmer.
Matt explained that, for years, people were told mass immigration would improve life for everyone. Supporters of multiculturalism claimed it would enrich culture and boost the economy. From the 1990s onward, many believed that more people meant more growth, higher productivity, and a better life for all.
However, Matt said that this new IMF report has changed the story. It suggests that bringing in large numbers of low-skilled immigrants can actually lower wages for the poorest people in Western countries. He described the report as a “bombshell” and said it proved that the experts have been wrong for many years.
But the IMF also pointed out a different benefit. Gita Gopinath, the IMF’s deputy managing director, told BBC Newsnight that immigration can help lower inflation. She explained that, since the UK has a shortage of workers in certain jobs, bringing in new workers helps meet those needs and can ease pressure on prices.
Still, Matt remained angry. He asked, if immigration really makes us richer, why hasn’t the economy grown much in recent years? He pointed out that between 2021 and 2024, the UK had a huge number of new immigrants—over 2.3 million—but economic growth stayed flat. He questioned why productivity hasn’t improved and why GDP per person is still falling. According to him, these facts don’t match the idea that immigration always benefits the economy.
