A prison officer has been charged with misconduct in public office following the release of an intimate video recorded inside HMP Wandsworth. The suspect, De Sousa Abreu, was apprehended at Heathrow Airport as she prepared to board a flight to Madrid. She appeared at Uxbridge Magistrates’ Court, where she confirmed her name, address, and date of birth.
The video, which sparked a police investigation, shows a sex act filmed by an inmate who jokingly remarks, “This is how we live at Wandsworth.
Piles of clothes can be seen on a bunk bed in the cell, and a friend recording the video is heard saying, “Guys, we’ve made history; this is what I’m telling you.” At one point, someone attempts to enter the cell, prompting the man filming to say, “Give me a minute, one second.
The incident, alleged to have occurred between June 26 and 28, highlights the severe conditions at HMP Wandsworth. Reports describe the prison as overcrowded and unsanitary, with issues such as rat and cockroach infestations, high levels of violence, and chronic staff shortages exacerbating the situation.
HMP Wandsworth, one of the most overcrowded prisons in England and Wales, houses around 1,584 inmates in a facility designed for 961. A recent report revealed that prisoners often go for days without time outdoors and are forced to choose between basic necessities due to insufficient staffing.
