President Donald Trump has expressed enthusiasm for the possibility of the United States becoming an “associate member” of the Commonwealth, a proposal reportedly being prepared by King Charles. Trump responded to the idea on his Truth Social platform, writing, “I Love King Charles. Sounds good to me!”
The offer is expected to be formally extended during Trump’s upcoming state visit to the UK later this year. British Prime Minister Keir Starmer reportedly delivered a handwritten invitation from King Charles to Trump during a recent visit to the White House.

The Commonwealth, a political association of 56 member nations, most of which are former British colonies, promotes cooperation and shared values among its members. If accepted, the US would become the 57th member, marking a significant expansion of the organization.
The proposal was initially considered during Trump’s first term, with the backing of the late Queen Elizabeth II, but did not materialize at the time. Now, King Charles is reviving the plan, hoping to strengthen ties between the US and the UK, as well as ease tensions between the US and Canada, a founding Commonwealth member.
The inclusion of the US in the Commonwealth could also symbolize the close relationship between the two nations and enhance the organization’s global influence. Despite the US’s revolutionary origins and independence from Britain, 36 current Commonwealth members are republics, including India, making the US’s potential membership less unusual.
