Government sources suggest Shamima Begum’s legal team is renewing efforts for her return to the UK, but officials warn of serious risks.
Shamima Begum’s lawyer, Tasnime Akunjee, believes recent developments could improve her chances of returning to the UK. This follows the collapse of Bashar al-Assad’s regime in Syria, which may create new opportunities for legal appeals. However, UK officials caution against this, citing significant national security concerns.
Authorities worry that allowing Begum to return could set a precedent, leading to other former extremists seeking repatriation. A government insider reportedly stated, “If Shamima is allowed back, it could open the floodgates to 100 others.” Officials fear that monitoring returnees could strain security resources and pose ongoing risks to public safety.
Begum, now 25, has been detained in a Syrian camp since fleeing her East London home in 2015 to join ISIS. While she has consistently campaigned to return to the UK, her citizenship was revoked in 2019 by the Conservative government, making her return legally complex.
The decision to strip Begum of her British citizenship sparked significant debate. Critics, including former Attorney General Richard Hermer and ex-Tory minister Jacob Rees-Mogg, have condemned the move as overly harsh and potentially discriminatory. Hermer described it as “draconian,” while Rees-Mogg argued it had racial undertones and failed to account for her being groomed and trafficked as a teenager.
Despite these criticisms, the government maintains its focus on preventing extremism and has not indicated any intention to reverse the decision. For now, Begum remains in legal limbo, with her return uncertain amid heightened security concerns.
