Andrew took on the Mega Mixed Grill challenge at a Devon steakhouse. He ate a 20oz rump steak, 12oz gammon, four sausages, three chicken wings, a chicken breast, and a 6oz cheeseburger.
The steakhouse in Paignton, Devon, has been called “mean” for not giving Andrew the £100 prize because he left “a few chips.” Andrew tried to finish the 3.2kg meal in under an hour and shared his attempt on social media on May 19. He almost finished the meal, leaving only a few chips and three onion rings, but started to struggle and nearly threw up with five minutes left.
Andrew gave up with three minutes remaining and posed for a photo with the almost-empty tray, which the steakhouse posted on Facebook. Many people commented that the steakhouse was being “harsh” and should have given him the prize.
The steakhouse owner, Gary King, defended the decision, saying, “You can’t move the goalposts.” Gary, 58, said he felt sorry for Andrew and would like to see him try again. The video of Andrew’s attempt has over 140,000 views on Facebook, with nearly 1,000 reactions and 400 comments.
Gary explained that after 20-25 minutes, it’s hard for people to keep eating because their stomachs feel full. Andrew did well at first but hit a wall and couldn’t continue. Gary increased the prize money from £50 to £100 to motivate Andrew, but it didn’t work. However, Andrew didn’t have to pay the usual £50 fee for failing because his attempt was broadcast for free on social media.
The steakhouse posted on Facebook: “Andrew took on the Mega Mixed Grill Challenge. Look how close he got! It’s still a failure! You must eat everything within 60 minutes, and he just couldn’t eat one more chip… so lost out on the £100 prize money.”
People had mixed reactions. Some felt Andrew should have won, saying it was “harsh” to deny him the prize for just a few chips. Others agreed with the steakhouse, saying rules are rules.
One commenter suggested Andrew try again, while another joked that Andrew could have put a chip in each nostril to finish. Despite the controversy, some people backed the steakhouse’s decision, believing Andrew should have pushed through for the prize.
