Former security guard Gavin Plumb has been sentenced to life in prison, with a minimum term of 15 years and 85 days, for plotting to kidnap, rape, and murder former “This Morning” presenter, Holly Willoughby. The court found Plumb guilty of these horrifying plans, which went far beyond mere fantasy.
As he was led to the cells in a grey sweatshirt, Plumb muttered, “15 years to kill myself,” but remained emotionless when the sentence was announced. The judge emphasized that Holly Willoughby, a beloved public figure, deserves respect for her private life, and praised her bravery for waiving her right to anonymity.
The judge stated that Plumb posed a genuine threat, with his sadistic and brutal plans for Willoughby clearly demonstrated by the evidence presented. The messages detailing his intentions were so graphic that they were not read aloud in court, but the jury reviewed every one of them. Plumb’s claim that he bought chloroform to clean a carpet stain was dismissed as a blatant lie.
During the trial, it was revealed that Plumb had been involved in online chats with an undercover police officer posing as an accomplice. Plumb’s discussions included finding a “crew” to help him carry out his vile plans. His actions had severe and life-changing impacts on Willoughby, both personally and professionally, as detailed in her private victim statement.
Prosecutor Alison Morgan KC highlighted the catastrophic impact on Willoughby and other victims of Plumb’s previous offenses. A woman Plumb attacked in 2008 shared how the news made her reflect on what could have happened if she hadn’t escaped. The prosecution argued that Plumb’s actions created additional trauma and fear, with his plans being so depraved that the media agreed not to report them in full detail.
Plumb’s defense claimed he was obsessed with Willoughby in a bizarre manner and was devastated by the pain he caused her. However, the jury convicted him based on the overwhelming evidence of his dangerous obsession and meticulous planning.
Plumb, who had a history of attacking women, was shown to be a serious threat to society. His sentencing ensures that he will remain behind bars, unable to harm anyone else. The CPS stressed the importance of this case in sending a clear message that violent plans against women will be prosecuted to the fullest extent.
