Elijah Gookol-Mely, an 18-year-old from Shepherd’s Bush, has been found guilty of murdering and robbing 17-year-old Victor Lee. The incident happened on June 25, 2023, in West London. Victor was stabbed and pushed into the Grand Union Canal. Despite the efforts of locals and emergency services, he died at the scene.
Victor, who was from North Acton, had developed an interest in buying and selling weapons online. On the day of the incident, he sold a crossbow to Gookol-Mely around 3 pm. Later that day, when Victor tried to sell him knives, he was attacked. Gookol-Mely stole Victor’s bike and rucksack, which contained several knives. The attack was motivated by robbery.
Gookol-Mely was arrested on June 30, 2023, after a thorough investigation by the Metropolitan Police. The investigation used mobile phone data, CCTV footage, and forensic evidence. A knife with Victor’s blood and Gookol-Mely’s DNA was found at Gookol-Mely’s home.
Detective Chief Inspector Brian Howie, who led the investigation, explained that Victor was not involved in gangs. He had a passion for bikes and was trying to make some money by buying and selling weapons online. However, he lacked the experience to understand the dangers involved. His family mentioned that he was easily influenced and had trouble assessing risky situations.
During the trial, it was revealed that Gookol-Mely had no remorse for his actions. A notebook found in his prison cell contained rap lyrics in which he boasted about the murder. He was convicted by a jury at the Old Bailey and will be sentenced on July 19, 2024. Two other teenagers who were initially charged were found not guilty.
Victor’s family is deeply affected by his loss. The conviction has brought some relief, but they continue to struggle with the tragic events that led to his death. This case has also raised concerns about how easily young people can access weapons online.
