This video captures the moment when paedophile teacher Rebecca Joynes was apprehended. After a fortnight-long trial at Manchester Crown Court, the jury found her guilty of six counts of sexual activity with a minor.
The charges involved two teenage boys she encountered through her role as a teacher at a school in Greater Manchester. The identities of the boys and the school are protected for legal reasons.
Today, on July 4, she received a prison sentence of six-and-a-half years and was ordered to sign the Sex Offender Register for life. Body-worn footage from Greater Manchester Police has revealed the moment that Rebecca Joynes, a former teacher, was arrested on suspicion of sexual activity with a child. Her arrest came after incriminating text messages were found on a student’s phone.
On the day the allegations surfaced, two police officers were shown in the video visiting her flat. Upon answering the door, they asked, “We are looking for Rebecca [Joynes], are we alright to come in for a sec? ” to which she responded, “Yeah, of course you can,”.
Following their entrance, Joynes was promptly arrested and cautioned. At this point, she incredulously questioned, “Are you serious? How’s it gone so far since..”
The attending officers swiftly silenced her concerns by stressing the arrest’s necessity was crucial for the protection of the victim and the investigation as a whole.
As a result of the episode, Joynes was filmed seated in the back of a police van, visibly upset and crossing her arms in protest.
Today, at a sentencing hearing held at Manchester Crown Court, Judge Kate Cornell expressed harsh criticism towards Joynes. The judge reproached her for showing ‘breathtaking arrogance,’ adding: “You have shown an unwilling inability to face up to wrongdoing. This does you no favours, Ms Joynes.”
Judge Cornell continued to admonish Joynes stating, “You were the adult, the one in control and should have known better. You were trusted by the school, the boys and the parents – for caring and protecting their sons. You abused that trust and exploited that role for your sexual gratification. It is inconceivable you did not realise that too.”
In a final nail-biting indictment, Judge Kate added, “You deliberately transgressed them and encouraged boys to breach that too. You turned a blind eye. It is astonishing arrogance that you were keeping the police waiting at your door as you were restoring your phone to factory settings.”
It was previously revealed at Manchester Crown Court that she took a 15 year old boy, referred to in media coverage of the case as ‘Boy A’, to the Trafford Centre. She bought him a £345 Gucci belt from Selfridges, then took him back to her flat in Salford where they had sex.
She was suspended from her job and later found to be pregnant with a second boy – ‘Boy B’ – whom she met when he was 15 before they shared a kiss, reports the Manchester Evening News. The relationship escalated into a sexual one, resulting in Joynes becoming pregnant and giving birth to his child, despite claiming it was ‘almost impossible’ for her to conceive due to a health condition.
He discovered she was pregnant after she arranged a ‘date night’ with rose petals and presented him with a baby grow bearing the words ‘I love my daddy to the moon and back’. Joynes, from Pensby Road, Wirral, denied all charges during the trial but was found guilty by the jury.
