In a notable incident captured on CCTV, off-duty Police Constable Rishi Thobhani apprehended a knife-wielding thief at a Poundland store. The thief, identified as Michael Delaney, 35, who is homeless, had stolen dishwasher tablets and marshmallows.
PC Thobhani recounted the events leading up to the intervention. “I noticed two Poundland workers chasing someone and stepped in to assist,” PC Thobhani explained. “They informed me about the thief, and I identified myself as a police officer.”
Despite being off-duty, PC Thobhani intervened when Delaney attempted to flee upon seeing him. “As I closed in, he brandished a large kitchen knife,” PC Thobhani stated. “I immediately shouted a warning and instructed him to drop the knife, but he continued to threaten me.”
Throughout the encounter, PC Thobhani prioritized public safety. “My main concern was preventing harm to others,” PC Thobhani emphasized. “He threatened to harm me if I approached.”
Taking swift action, PC Thobhani managed to disarm and detain Delaney amidst the escalating danger. “I saw an opportunity and acted decisively,” PC Thobhani recalled. “There was a brief struggle, but I successfully disarmed him and restrained him until additional officers arrived.”
Delaney was subsequently arrested and charged with theft and possession of a bladed weapon. He later pleaded guilty in court.
