A US commentator has launched a scathing attack on Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, saying that America “would love” to send them back to the UK.
Julie Hartman, a host on Salem News Channel, made the remark during an interview with GB News’ Darren Grimes on Monday.
According to a report by GB News, Grimes was asking Hartman about the problems facing California, where the Duke and Duchess of Sussex currently reside, when he jokingly said that they were “not just because Harry and Meghan moved there”.
Hartman replied: “By the way, we would love to send Harry and Meghan back. I don’t know why they came to us. We will gladly ship them back to the UK.”
Hartman’s comment reflects the growing criticism that the Sussexes have faced in the US since they stepped back from royal duties in 2020 and moved to California with their son Archie, who was less than a year old at the time. They later welcomed their daughter Lilibet in 2021.
The couple have been accused of hypocrisy and attention-seeking for some of the projects they have undertaken as part of their new independent life, such as signing lucrative deals with Netflix and Spotify, producing a podcast, a documentary series, and Harry’s upcoming memoir, Spare.
They have also sparked controversy for their explosive interviews with Oprah Winfrey and James Corden, in which they revealed details of their strained relationship with the royal family and made allegations of racism and lack of support.
Some US media outlets and celebrities have mocked the couple for their actions, such as Family Guy and South Park, which parodied them in recent episodes.
Perez Hilton, a popular American blogger, told GB News last week that the couple “need to cultivate their celebrity” in the US, as they are “not royals to us”. He compared them to the Kardashians, saying they are “famous because of their names”.
Scarlett Mccgwire, a former Labour adviser, agreed with Hilton’s assessment, saying that the couple “don’t know what they are”. She added that the Kardashians are “rather better” at making money, as they are “more street smart”.
The Sussexes have not responded to Hartman’s comment or any of the other criticisms they have received in the US. They have previously said that they left the UK to seek a more peaceful and private life for themselves and their children.
