The Duchess of Cambridge is reportedly worried that her sister-in-law, Meghan Markle, will expose their strained relationship and other royal secrets in a potential memoir.
According to a royal source, Kate Middleton is “braced” for the possibility of Meghan Markle writing her own autobiography, which could be a “huge money-spinner” and a “bombshell” for the royal family.
According to a report by Express, Royal author Tom Bower, who is working on a biography of Meghan Markle, has predicted that the 42-year-old former actress will pen her own memoir and share her side of the story of what happened to her when she met Prince Harry, fell in love, joined the most famous family in the world and then left.
Bower told The Sun² that Meghan Markle’s book would be “more powerful” than Prince Harry’s own book Spare, which was released earlier this year and caused a rift between him and his brother, Prince William.
Bower said: “Meghan’s book would be more powerful than Harry’s because she would have lots of moans and groans about how badly she was treated as a royal. She would also talk about her relationship with Kate, whether she was hostile or welcomed her from the start.
Another royal author, Phil Dampier, agreed with Bower and said that Meghan Markle’s memoir would outsell Spare and would be “the ideal opportunity” for her to give her version of events. Dampier told The Sun² that Meghan Markle would reveal “what really happened” between her and Kate Middleton in the run-up to the wedding in 2018, when each allegedly made the other cry over bridesmaid dresses.
Dampier said: “She probably thought she should have got equal billing and didn’t seem to appreciate from the start that she and Harry were the B team, not on the same level as William and Kate. She will probably talk about comparisons that were made in the press between them and will come across as bitter.
Dampier also suggested that Kate Middleton would be the main target of Meghan Markle’s memoir, as she is seen as the future queen consort and the most popular member of the royal family.
He said: “The royals will assume the worst and brace themselves for more revelations. It would only make the relations much worse, but I still don’t think the royals will hit back. They will stay quiet and soak it up, even though they will be deeply hurt by it.
Meghan Markle and Prince Harry have been living in California since they stepped back from their senior royal roles in 2020. They have signed lucrative deals with Netflix, Spotify and Penguin Random House to produce content that reflects their values and causes. They have also given several interviews in which they have criticised the royal institution and accused some members of racism and neglect.
The royal family has maintained a dignified silence on most of their claims, but has also issued statements to deny some of them or express their sadness and disappointment. The relationship between the Sussexes and the Cambridges has been tense and frosty, with only occasional contacts and brief reunion.
A potential memoir by Meghan Markle could further damage the chances of reconciliation and healing between the two couples, who were once dubbed as the Fab Four. It could also cause more embarrassment and controversy for the monarchy, which is already facing challenges and criticisms from various quarter.
