A woman from Birmingham has been put in prison because she caused the death of an elderly patient whom she attacked in a hospital on January 21, 2021.
The woman who attacked the patient, Philomena Wilson, also known as Brenda, was staying at City Hospital when she suddenly hurt the 83-year-old, who was also a patient there.
When some nurses and another patient came to help, they were also hurt, but not seriously. The elderly woman had a broken skull and unfortunately died from her injuries three weeks later on February 11. Wilson had been taken to the hospital after being arrested for hurting someone and initially said she couldn’t remember what happened that morning when she repeatedly hit the victim and banged her head on the floor.
However, on April 18, 2023, the 56-year-old woman from Radnor Road, Handsworth, admitted to causing the death of the elderly woman due to her diminished responsibility. Today, she has been given a prison sentence of seven years and will be supervised for five more years after that.
Detective Inspector Michelle Thurgood, from the Homicide Team, expressed sympathy to the family of the elderly woman who tragically lost her life in such a terrible way. The family had to wait for a long time to see justice served, and it is hoped that this sentence finally provides them with some sense of closure.
